How to Work While Studying Abroad
Finding a job while studying abroad can seem challenging, but with the right tips and a bit of strategy, it’s completely possible. Beyond the money, having a job connects you to local life, improves your language skills, and opens doors.
At Uniwords, we tell it like it is — with real stories from students like you.
Can you work as an international student?
Yes. In countries like Spain, Germany, Canada or Australia, most student visas allow part-time work under certain conditions:
- Spain: up to 20 hours per week during term time, with a compatible contract and NIE. Full-time during holidays.
- Canada: similar limits, plus on-campus work is usually allowed.
Always check that your visa permits it and that your employer processes the paperwork correctly.
Real tip: many students in Madrid or Barcelona found their first jobs in cafés, language schools or as babysitters for local families.
Practical tips that actually work
You don’t need a lot of experience — your attitude matters most. Here are tips that helped Uniwords students land their first jobs abroad:
- Create a clear, visual CV in Spanish or English (Canva is great to start).
- Register on platforms like InfoJobs, StudentJob, Domestika (for creative jobs), or Indeed.
- Use LinkedIn’s job search, set alerts, and connect with university alumni.
- Attend university job fairs.
- Improve your Spanish — even a B1 level opens up roles in retail or customer service.
In Valencia, a Uniwords ambassador found a job as an English activity leader thanks to a flyer at her campus. In Portugal, another student started waiting tables after simply asking at a terrace.
